About Us
Our 'Ohana - Our Story
'Ohana Island Grindz came to life in September of 2021. It had been a dream for years to have somewhere in the Upcountry area to get some GOOD ice cream! Whether it be to celebrate something special, to cool off after the keiki's soccer games, or just to cure the craving for an old fashioned root beer float. When our location opened up, we joked about opening our dream shop in that spot. We reminisced about a much-loved and missed local kitchen that was once in the area serving up great home-style meals and the best saimin! Then the thought came to offer a small local menu full of 'ono comfort foods, combined with our ice cream shop dream, and hopefully we could leave people as full, as happy, and with the same feeling of 'ohana! Opening a restaurant in a "historic" town definitely comes with it's challenges, from our particular infrastructure to our delicate wastewater situation, we've found ways to overcome it all. Despite the challenges of Covid-19, we decided to push forward! We hope to be serving our community, visitors to our beloved Makawao Town, and our 'ohana for years to come!

We like to think of our cozy little spot as reminiscent of growing up in, or visiting your Tutu's (grandparents') kitchen! Even though seating may be limited, there's always space for everyone! And even if you don't have time to stay a while, the main thing is that you stopped by! Good food made the way tutu made it! Supporting our small business helps us to support some of our favorite local vendors as well.

'Ohana means family, however, in Hawaiian culture, family is a term that includes anyone that you feel connected to or bonded to with love. Our community is part of our 'ohana, and we try to support our local community as much as possible. We source as much of our meat, vegetables and fruits from local small businesses. Supporting our small business helps us to support some of our favorite local vendors as well. We are proud to partner with businesses like Kula Country Farms, Lopes Farm, Maui Cattle Company, Roselani, and many more, to bring you the best experience possible when you visit our 'ohana at 'Ohana Island Grindz!
